It looks like Tesla Motors is already looking to expand its product line. But it is not another line of vehicles the company is developing; no, Tesla Motors has announced their plan to offer a home battery product that will allow people to store energy from solar panels.
But while this might be a big step for the fledgling company they are not the first to work on this new technology.
"The trend is more and more players being interested in the storage market," explains GTM Research's Ravi Manghani. Tesla. He goes on to say that there Tesla is positioned in a favorable way, which gives them "access to a bigger pool of customers, both residential and commercial, who are looking to deploy storage with or without solar."
Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk also adds, "The goal is complete transformation of the entire energy infrastructure of the world, to completely sustainable zero carbon. It's analogous to the way mobile leap-frogged landlines."
He also notes, "This is going to be really great for the poorest communities in the world. This allows you to be completely off grid."
Musk continues, "I think we should collectively do something about this…we have this handy fusion reactor in the sky, called the sun."
Finally, SolarCity chief technology officer, Peter Rive, adds a little more encouragement. "I don't believe this product in its first incarnation will be interesting to the average person," he says. Still, he says that demand for products like this will continue to grow.
The new system is expected to cost about $ 3,500 in the United States with a further international release sometime in the next year.
