A majority of French say that economic and social issues should be the top priority for candidates in next year's presidential election, an Elabe poll showed.
About 64 percent of voters say the economy and social matters are more important than questions about the French identity and security in the presidential campaign, according to a poll of 1,002 voters published Saturday. The poll was taken Aug. 29 and 30.
With more than a dozen candidates competing for the presidential nomination of France's opposition Republican party and politicians such as Socialist Arnaud Montebourg running on the left, the French election is gathering pace. It will be held in two rounds on April 23 and May 7 next year.
Asked which party they trust most to improve the economy and create jobs, 23 percent of those surveyed opted The Republicans, 18 percent the National Front and 11 percent the Socialists. Forty-eight percent of those surveyed said they had confidence in none of those three.
