Sunday, Dec. 25 is Christmas Day 2016, but the federal holiday will be observed on Monday, Dec. 26. This year’s calendar means a lot of changes from Christmas 2016 hours and what’s open and closed on Christmas Day, as well as Monday, the 26th.
Walmart will close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, two hours earlier than normal. The store is closed on Christmas Day but will reopen Dec. 26. Check your local store for exact hours.

Many major shopping outlets will be open Dec. 26, including the Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, The Mall at Short Hills, The Mills at Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, the Bridgewater Commons Mall in Bridgewater, Woodbridge Center, the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown and the Deptford Mall.
Although Dec. 26 will be a holiday for many here in the U.S. because Christmas falls on a weekend this year, the day following the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is always an official holiday in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Known as Boxing Day, the observance started out as a respite for servants to visit family and also to receive gifts from their employers — which came in Christmas boxes.
