What is the most successful product in the world? We now have the answer—Apple's iPhone. Sales of iPhones helped the company record the most profitable quarter of any listed company ever. The company made a profit of $ 18 billion, surpassing the record $ 15.9 billion oil giant ExxonMobil made in the second quarter of 2012. For Apple, that is predominantly due to sales of its iPhone. "There are very few products that have boosted the financials of a company in the way that the iPhone has for Apple," as per research firm IHS.
In the final quarter of 2014, Apple sold 74.4 million iPhones, worth $ 51.1 billion. There were others before it, like Boeing's 747. The company expected to sell only 400 jets before it became obsolete but 1,500 aircraft have been built and it is now making a new version of Air Force One.
Sony's Walkman was introduced in 1979. Some 200 million Walkman devices were eventually sold worldwide. Xerox launched their copier in 1959, called 'the most successful single product' in its time, so much so that photocopying was named after it. Microsoft Windows came out in 1985 and it still powers 80% of computers and laptops worldwide. Sony's playstation has sold 90 million units, while Rubik's Cube, the puzzle, has sold 350 million units. Yet, they pale before the iPhone. Since its debut in 2007, the iPhone has sold an incredible 500 million units, making it by far the world's biggest-selling product.
