US customer costs recorded their biggest one month drop decline in December in six years. Moreover, a gauge of underlying inflation held steady, which could boost the case for delaying the initial interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve.

The drop reflected the huge decline in gas prices enhancing further evidence of falling inflation pressures. The Labor Department stated on Friday its Customer Price Index dropped 4 percent last month, the biggest drop just after sliding 3 percent in November.

 According to Dan Greenhaus the chief strategist at BTIG in New York, "It seems practically specific that additional declines in headline inflation prices will be seen in coming months. What is critical though is that core inflation prices are not necessarily immune to declines in oil and gasoline."

While Fed officials have viewed the energy-driven inflation weakness as transitory, a powerful dollar is taming underlying cost pressures, which could trigger some discomfort. The so-referred to as core CPI, which strips out food and power,/swas unchanged in December.

It was only the second time considering the fact that 2010 that it did not enhance. The core CPI had nudged up .1 per cent in November. Inflation is running below the Fed's 2 per cent target, despite a strengthening labour market and overall economy. A second report from the Fed showed factory output rose .three per cent final month, rising for the fourth straight month.

Slower global demand and increased shale production in the US have brought on an oil glut, sending crude prices tumbling. Brent crude costs approached a six-year low this week, a sign that general inflation pressures will remain subdued in the months ahead.

Gasoline costs tumbled 9.4 per cent last month, the most significant drop because December 2008, right after declining 6 percent in November. Gasoline has now declined for six straight months.

Energy prices recorded their largest decline considering the fact that 2008 as meals rates rose 0.3 per cent soon after rising 0.2 per cent the prior month. Away from food and energy, shelter fees increased .two per cent final month following rising .three per cent in November.
